Bursary Recipient Spotlight: Kwakhanya Mbenyana
For Kwakhanya Mbenyana, a second-year Bachelor of Sustainable Food Systems student at the University of the Free State, the support of the JDK Benefit Trust has been about far more than financial assistance—it has been a source of stability, encouragement, and compassion during one of the most challenging periods of the academic journey.
After completing a first year without financial support, receiving the bursary has transformed Kwakhanya’s university experience by removing the constant worry of covering the many costs associated with tertiary education.
Having the support of the JDK Trust has allowed me to truly prioritise my studies without the anxiety of the other expenses that come with being in a tertiary institution,” Kwakhanya shares. “This has been a significant change for me, as I had no financial support during my first year of university.”
The Trust’s impact extended beyond financial support. Earlier this year, Kwakhanya experienced the heartbreaking loss of a grandmother near the end of the first semester. During this difficult time, the compassion and understanding shown by the Trust provided much-needed comfort and reassurance.
“The team at the Trust met me with kindness, comfort, and understanding, which helped me process my grief,” Kwakhanya says. “Their support helped me maintain my academic performance during such a difficult time.”
This combination of financial assistance and genuine care has enabled Kwakhanya to remain focused on academic goals while navigating personal challenges with resilience and determination.
As Kwakhanya continues pursuing a degree in Sustainable Food Systems, there is a strong commitment to making the most of every opportunity, building a meaningful career, and contributing positively to society through education and professional growth.
