Resilience and Gratitude: Phumelela Ngcobo Reflects on a Meaningful Second Term
As the second term draws to a close, Phumelela Ngcobo takes a moment to reflect on her academic journey so far—a journey marked by both challenges and deeply meaningful milestones.“I remain truly grateful for the continued support from the JDK Trust,” she says. “Their assistance has been more than just financial—it’s created a stable foundation that allows me to focus, grow, and thrive.” This term brought with it some tough challenges. Phumelela shares that she struggled with fatigue brought on by an increased workload and the constant demands of a high-pressure academic environment.

“Trying to stay focused while battling exhaustion was difficult,” she admits. “What made it even more challenging was being far from my family. Their presence fuels my motivation, and being away for too long can make that drive begin to fade.”
Despite these difficulties, there were memorable moments of inspiration and progress. One of the highlights of Phumelela’s term was attending Nedbank’s networking event at their headquarters—an experience she describes as “unforgettable.” It gave her valuable insight into the professional world and allowed her to engage with industry leaders and peers, further motivating her to pursue her goals.
Outside the classroom, Phumelela focuses on nurturing her well-being and personal development. She finds joy and balance through reading self-improvement books and cycling at her local gym, two activities that keep her energised and grounded. A significant pillar of support in her journey has been the JDK Benefit Trust, which has funded her accommodation this year.

“I now have a roof over my head, a place of security—a sanctuary I can call a home away from home,” she explains. “It’s a privilege I do not take for granted, especially knowing that some students are forced to sleep in study centres or even outdoors. That reality is heartbreaking, and it makes me all the more thankful.”
Phumelela’s gratitude runs deep. “Your support continues to make a meaningful difference in my studies and personal growth. Thank you once again for walking this journey with me.”
